404 Not Found

The server has nothing at this address: a page or file that was moved, deleted, or never existed.

A dead end for a visitor, or a broken image, missing styling or a script that never runs.

Seeing it on someone else’s site?

  • Check the address for a typo, then try the site's home page or its search.
  • An old link or bookmark to a page the site has since moved is the usual cause.

Why it happens, if it is your site

  • A page or file renamed, moved or deleted, and links or references still pointing at the old address.
  • A site migration or a new URL structure without redirects.
  • For a file inside a page: an image, a script or a font the page references that is not there, often after a redesign or a build.
  • A missing favicon.ico or apple-touch-icon.png: harmless, but it shows up.

How to fix it

  1. For a moved page, a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
  2. For a file inside a page, find which page references it (a Broken Here report says the page and the URL) and fix or remove the reference.
  3. Make the 404 page useful: search, the main links, a way back.

Whose problem it is

Either the site's own code or a third party's, depending on where it comes from.

Does your site have it?

Free, no account. We open your page and four more in a clean Chrome and list every error like this one, with the page and the click that caused it. How the free page check works.

Check only sites you run or have permission to check.
