Errors / Network errors

net::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID

The site's security certificate has expired.

Every visitor gets a warning page, or a missing resource if it is a subdomain.

Why it happens

  • Automatic renewal failed: a changed DNS record, a blocked challenge, a stopped cron job.
  • A certificate bought for a year and forgotten.
  • Rarely, the visitor's clock is wrong.

How to fix it

  1. Renew it, then find out why renewal failed so it does not happen again.
  2. Monitor certificate expiry, for every host the site loads from.
  3. Read the dates on the certificate from the padlock in the address bar: an expiry in the past is the site; dates that look valid while the error persists point at the visitor's clock, a common cause on phones and old laptops with a dead battery. A certificate that expired on one server behind a load balancer shows for some visitors and not others.

Whose problem it is

Usually the server that answers the request.
