429 Too Many Requests
You, or someone on your network, asked the site too often, and it is making you wait.
Features fail in bursts, often for the most active visitors.
Seeing it on someone else’s site?
- Wait a few minutes and try again; the limit resets on its own.
- Offices, schools and mobile networks share one address, so someone else may have used the allowance.
Why it happens, if it is your site
- A rate limit on the site or an API: too many requests from one address or one key in a window.
- A page calling an API on every keystroke or scroll.
- A third-party API's free tier used up.
How to fix it
- Debounce requests triggered by typing or scrolling, and cache answers that do not change.
- Honour
Retry-Afterand back off instead of retrying at once. - Check the plan limits of the API behind it.
Whose problem it is
Either the site's own code or a third party's, depending on where it comes from.
