405 Method Not Allowed
The address exists, but not for the kind of request that was sent to it.
The form or action does nothing, or shows an error.
Seeing it on someone else’s site?
- Usually a broken form or button on the site, not something you can fix; going back and reloading the page sometimes helps.
Why it happens, if it is your site
- A form posting to an address that only accepts GET, or an API called with
POSTwhere it expectsPUTorDELETE. - A static host (or a CDN) receiving a
POST: most only serve GET. - A redirect (
http→https, a trailing slash) turning a POST into a GET the endpoint then refuses, or the reverse. - A CORS preflight (
OPTIONS) the server does not handle.
How to fix it
- The response's
Allowheader lists what the address does accept. - Point the form or the call at the right address and method, with the final URL (no redirect in between).
- Answer
OPTIONSon API routes that browsers call from other origins.
Whose problem it is
Usually the site's own code or settings.
